Deadmau5 has dominated recent headlines for his ubiquity at Ultra Music Festival. Between filling in for The Prodigy, joining Pendulum during their highly publicized reunion show, and playing his own scheduled set, Joel Zimmerman’s myriad of feats in Miami drowned out much of the news of his inaugural Beats 1 Radio show. Friday, March 18, Deadmau5 joined Skrillex in the cadre of high profile dance music producers and label heads to establish a recurrent, imprint-specific residency for Beats 1 Radio. Zimmerman’s partnership with Beats 1 came as a surprise to many because of his known affiliation with rival streaming service TIDAL, but his first stab at Apple Music’s airwaves was nothing short of commendable.
For episode 1 of “Mau5trap Presents…,” Deadmau5 split his two hour slot into two segments. For the first hour, Zimmerman selected “Joel’s Favorite Tracks,” traversing through an experientially diverse selection of Aphex Twin, Jon Hopkins, Boards of Canada, and Philip Glass. For the second half of his broadcast, “In the Mix with Deadmau5,” Zimmerman proffered an hour-long mix, containing similar fare as the initial segment, while further venturing into the techno realm with tracks from Maceo Plex, Phil Kieran & Jochem Pap, and more.
